It is possible to use binary operators such as And, Or, or Xor as rules for cellular automata (CA). The binary operations are applied to the neighbor cells.

And and Or operators give a class I CA; the cells get all black or white. The Xor operator seems to be a class III CA with random and noisy patterns. The Xor function for radius 1 is equivalent to the elementary CA rule 150.
