Communities of Nations Bridged by Language Similarity
Different clusters of languages are prominent in different nations of the world. You can therefore "connect" nations based on the similarity of their set of prominent languages. This Demonstration visualizes this connection. The left panel of the graphic shows the connections among the nations based on whether they satisfy a user-specified level of "Jaccard similarity" among their prominent languages. The right panel shows a disconnected graph in which a high proportion of the links are intra-community.
Jaccard similarity, which is used to cluster nations in this Demonstration, is equal to one minus the quotient of the size of the intersection of two sets and the size of the union of those two sets.
