The colors of cells in this continuous cellular automaton (CCA) ranges in grayscale from 0 to 1. CCAs are analogous to totalistic cellular automata, in which the cells are calculated as a sum of the 3 neighbor cells (for ). The CCA rule calculates the mean of the 3 cells plus a constant, and the integer part is suppressed. It is possible to use values from mathematical functions such as sinc and sine or numerical sequences such as noise (random real numbers) as initial conditions.

The density and contour views the CCA evolution different from the traditional discrete data plot.
