Forces on a Simple Pendulum

The net force driving an ideal pendulum is the sum of the gravity pull and the tensile force from the string. This net force is tangent to the circular path of the pendulum and perpendicular to the (taut) string. Because the string is assumed non-stretchable, the net force equals the projection of the gravity force onto the string's perpendicular.
