Given two jugs of known capacities—say 3 and 5 gallons—and a well with an inexhaustible supply of water, determine how to obtain exactly one gallon of water by filling up or emptying the vessels into each other or back into the well. This Demonstration shows the steps necessary to achieve the desired goal. Adjust the slider to control the relative capacities of the jugs.
