Ein magisches Quadrat der Ordnung 4 enthält die ganzen Zahlen 1 bis 16. Das gilt nicht für fast-magische Quadrate, einige Zahlen können darin wiederholt vorkommen. In fast-magischen Quadraten ist die Summe jeder 2×2 Untermatrix in den Ecken, die Summe der 4 Glieder in den Ecken, als auch die Summe der zentralen 2×2 Untermatrix immer die magische Summe.
