The prototype elements with valence 1, 2, 3, and 4 are H, O, N, and C, respectively. Some simple compounds, particularly those of special importance in biology, can be made from combinations of these elements. For each choice of two or more elements, two representative molecules are shown. (The combinations C, N and C, N, O are omitted.)
