The coefficients of a projection are permuted to accentuate smaller or larger scale differences in a nested pattern. The pattern is given by a stack of binary slices at different resolutions. Each slice contributes one bit to the colors of the resulting pixels, but the more significant bits have a stronger impact on the resulting image.
