Traditionally stairs are one of the most painful parts of a building. This Demonstration calculates stairwell length, the length of the total run of the stairs, and the number of steps. It takes into account legal minimum headroom requirements, the thickness of the finished floor, and total floor-to-finished-floor height (also called the "total rise"), given the desired riser and tread lengths.

The minimum values have been set to the minimum allowable values for Massachusetts and most localities in the U.S. The initialized values are considered to be "standard". Dimensions are in inches.
