Stalactites form on the ceilings of caves due to limestone being deposited by slowly dripping water.

This Demonstration roughly models the growth process: start with a square array with small random values, representing a nearly smooth ceiling; repeatedly select a few random sites and increase the largest of these sites by 1. Dozens of iterations later, some stalactites emerge.
