This Demonstration shows identical particle wavefunctions for bosons (symmetric under exchange) and fermions (antisymmetric under exchange) constructed from Gaussian single-particle wavefunctions with different dispersions and . The mean separation of particles is calculated for the two cases, demonstrating the effective exchange forces acting between identical particles. The Pauli exclusion principle is illustrated by the fermionic wavefunction vanishing at any point where .
