The deck (leaf) of a bascule (seesaw) bridge is balanced around a fulcrum placed on a pier with the help of a counterweight. The bascule bridge shown in this Demonstration has two leaves, and illustrates a gear drive that uses a pinion attached to the stationary part of the bridge and a gear segment fixed to the leaf. This solution is used for the Tower Bridge in London.
