This Demonstration shows the behavior of a damped oscillator subject to external forced oscillations, with . The result is a function of the ratio , where is the frequency of the excitation and is the natural frequency.


The equation of motion of the oscillator:




is the displacement of the oscillator,

is the mass of the oscillator,

is the damping coefficient,

is the stiffness coefficient,

is the length of the undeformed spring,

is the amplitude of the excitation,

is the frequency of the excitation,

is the dimensionless damping coefficient,

is the natural frequency.
