Every point on a ruled surface has a straight line on the surface going through that point. A hyperbolic paraboloid is a doubly ruled surface, with two lines through each point.

This Demonstration draws a doubly ruled surface with threads passing through points on one face axis of a cube. Small cubes are located on the diagonals, giving a conceptual design for an adjustable device.
