This Demonstration shows the normal modes in a monatomic periodic linear chain. You can vary the number of atoms, the wave vector in the first Brillouin zone, and the amplitude of the oscillations. For small
, sound waves are produced. The stationary waves enable the Brillouin-zone boundaries to be mapped.
