Visualize how an applied force (the red arrow) generates a reaction force (the blue arrow) on a simple lever that is constrained to be horizontal. The mechanical gain (or advantage) is the ratio of the lengths from the forces to the fulcrum. No units are provided because the underlying relationship can be applied to any force and length units. The hyperbolas represent the reaction force for the two extremes of applied force.
