This Demonstration shows the input and output voltage of an RLC series circuit with tunable resistance , capacitance , and inductance .

The plot represents the voltage across the capacitor over time. The governing equation for the circuit is given by

where the right side of the equation represents the input sinusoidal voltage.

As inductance or capacitance increases, the period of the output increases. As resistance increases, the rate of decay increases. The discriminant of the characteristic equation determines the type of response: overdamped, underdamped or critically damped.
