Random points on a sphere are connected by lines. When you choose spheres as the connections, spheres are drawn on those lines as diameters. When you choose lines as the connections, is drawn slightly smaller, making most of the lines visible.

The algorithm minimizes the total length of the lines. At each step it selects one additional point by finding the shortest additional edge.
