The first example shows a simple hinged dissection of a 5×5 square into a 3×3 and a 4×4 square with the 3×3 square staying in one piece.

The second example shows a hinged dissection of an eight-step stair into a 6×6 square using nine hinges. Is there a solution with less than nine hinges?

Care has to be taken that no parts overlap. This ensures that we can build the puzzle with real tiles.
