Wheel Illusion

Interact on desktop, mobile and cloud with the free Wolfram Player or other Wolfram Language products.
The various rings seem to turn in different directions depending on their speed. This stroboscopic effect is due to the rings being sampled at discrete times, not continuously. Similar sampling effects can be observed when viewing rolling wheels in movies or on television.
