Using cubes, you can approximate the shape of a sphere of a given radius. By sliding the sampling rate up and down, you can add and subtract the number of cubes in a uniform manner. Using spherical coordinates and , the sample rate takes a reading every radians up to for the angle and every radians up to for the angle.
