Rules of elementary cellular automata do not stay the same in this demonstration. A rule which is valid at time 0 is transformed by applying itself to itself. All elementary rules end up at 15 rules that are fixed points of this selfreferential evolution. Select one of those 15 fixed point rules to see how they process other initial conditions. The left plot shows the evolution of the selected rule and the right plot shows the evolution of the selected initial condition as the rule changes.
